picture-006croppedscoopsized1Two thousand and eight was not an easy year for Americans. You can tell by looking in people’s eyes and at their furrowed brows; you can also tell by looking at the record-high 2008 Samaritan Center assistance statistics.

In 2008, the Center shared $173,656 with 4,727 people in Eastern Hamilton County. This amount is up a startling 33% from the $130,218 distributed in 2007.

This surge came mostly in the realm of food, where 28% more was distributed in 2008 than in 2007. There was also a significant increase in demand for school supplies and Christmas toys. In 2008, 160 children received school supply assistance, and 272 received Christmas toys, both all-time highs for the Center.

The Center also shared $34,056 in rent and utility assistance and $15,483 in clothes, furniture, and other items from our thrift store. Other assistance categories include baby supplies, gasoline, kerosene, medical assistance, and more.

With all expenses on the rise and the job market on the decline, the Samaritan Center expects 2009 to be another record-breaking year. However, we are confident that with our community’s continued support, we will be here ready to help stem the rising tide of need.
